Voyager: Jupiter, Saturn and Beyond – Lecture with Ron Smith
January 10, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm$10
Throughout the 19th and most of the 20th centuries, planetary scientists dedicated most of their research toward Mars. Mars is relatively close. The surface of Mars can be observed though a telescope. The outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, remained shrouded in mystery. That all changed with the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. From 1979 through 1989, they brought us fascinating views of the outer planets into our living rooms. Ron Smith, astronomer and former Griffith Observatory planetarium lecturer, will interpret the incredible findings made by the two Voyager spacecraft. You’ll see a moon with active volcanoes, a moon covered by a vast ocean, a moon with lakes of liquid methane, a cyclonic storm over twice the diameter of earth, and the exquisite beauty of Saturn’s rings. Fasten your safety belts and be part of the most incredible space journey ever made.
