This Is Halloween

In the old days, townspeople celebrated the darkening of days with “All Hallows Eve,” a night lit up with jack-o-lanterns, apple bobbing, pranks, and costumes. The St. George Opera reimagines delightful old traditions with “This is Halloween,” an eerie evening (and afternoon matinee) of ghost stories and music vignettes from Nightmare before Christmas, Harry Potter, Carmen, and the Magic Flute. Local residents and travelers of any age will revel in the fun of this special All Hallows Eve. As the sun sets on the red rocks, and darkness is lit only by distant city lights—the festival of fear and fun begins.

Come—with kids or just your inner child—take a tour of Halloween Town and meet the residents: ghosts, witches, and mummies, guided by Jack, the town Mayor! Come early to trick-or-treat, have your fortune told, and bid in the silent auction. During intermission, the bidding continues for a chance to win fun Halloween treats and prizes.

You’ve got four performances to choose from—two on Saturday the 27th at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta (kayentaarts.com), and two at Brigham’s Playhouse (visit stgeorgeopera.com for details on Brigham’s Playhouse shows). Don’t miss this year’s unbelievably cool Spooktacular Halloween event! Ticket prices begin at $10 and can be purchased at kayentaarts.com. Costumes are optional.

About St. George Opera.

St. George Opera (SGO) began in 2011 and ran through 2013, then disbanded until Performer, Teacher, and Director, Dr. Amy Nielsen revived the company in 2016. Nielsen says, “I am excited for SGO to grow and expand. I hope it will eventually endear itself in the hearts of people living in Southern Utah and surrounding area. Opera isn’t just some ancient art, to be enjoyed by only those with ‘refined tastes.’  While all operas won’t resonate with everyone, there is an opera for everyone!”
