The (New) Case for Life on Mars with Ron Smith

The New Case For Life on Mars
Ever since Mars was first observed through a telescope, we humans have been captivated by the red planet’s apparent similarity to earth. Mars had an atmosphere. Mars had polar ice caps. It had clouds, dust storms…dark green areas resembling vegetation growing across a desert oasis. However, early Mars fly-by missions—Mariners 4, 6, and 7—revealed a different Mars.
The polar ice caps were dry ice…frozen carbon dioxide. The atmosphere lacked oxygen, and it was too thin to allow for water to exist in liquid form on the surface. Alas, Mars appeared to be more like the moon than Earth. Now, a series of Mars rover explorations—the Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity—reveal a Mars that once had a thick atmosphere and water flowing across its surface. Could life have formed on the red planet billions of years ago? Retired\professor and astronomer Ron Smith will take us on a journey through time and space as he unveils evidence that strongly suggests life formed on Mars about four billion years ago. An informal social gathering begins at 6 pm. Enjoy light appetizers and beverages, mingling and conversation. Cost is $15, including refreshments.
