Kurt Nikkanen, Daniel Gaisford, Jason Bonham, & Jessika Soli

Fri Feb 18, 2022 – Sat Feb 19, 2022

We are proud to present world renowned violinist Kurt Nikkanen and a team of virtuosos for a night of adventurous music. Kurt has been hailed as “brilliant” by the New York Times and is soloist for the Lincoln Center Ballet Orchestra in New York.

Nikkanen and Gaisford met at the Aspen Music festival as Juilliard students and began a life long friendship. The two have performed in public for decades and bring a wonderful program to Kayenta.
The program begins with the famous Duo for Violin and Cello by Zoltån Kodaly. This duo was written in 1914 and is full of melodic folk melodies of the composer’s native Hungary. With Bela Barok, Kodaly traveled Hungary to collect local folksongs and transcribe them into his works. The Duo is an exciting, virtuosic work that technically challenges the performers and creates a spectacular, polyphonic soundscape. After the Kodaly, is a short surprise that will thrill the audience and that Nikkanen and Gaisford are well known for performing.

After intermission, Nikkanen and Gaisford are joined by cellist, Jessika Soli, violist, Jason Bonham, and violinist, Urs Rutishauser. They will perform the jewel of the chamber music repertoire and the last chamber work written by Franz Schubert, The Cello Quintet in C major. Known for the unbelievable beauty and symphonic character, the string quintet features two cellos to create a deeper, darker sound to the ensemble. The unforgettable melodies and energetic storms that propel the musical excitement to the work’s triumphant end are attributes that characterize this well known masterpiece.
