Musical Splendor with Cosmopolitan Baroque

Join us for a musical journey to Europe from the 16th to 18th centuries in the upcoming concert “Musical Splendor” with Cosmopolitan Baroque. Enjoy an evening where great virtuosity, elegance and excitement uniquely meet together!
Have you ever seen a harpsichord, viola da gamba or baroque traverso flute being performed in a live concert? Period instruments are made to recreate the appearance and sound of the instruments from hundreds of years ago so that old music will sound like it used to when it was first composed, and thus closer to the way the music was originally intended.In their Kayenta performance, members of the Cosmopolitan Baroque will introduce and demonstrate on the period instruments they play.
Come meet harpsichordist-scholar Jonathan Rhodes Lee, traverso flute virtuoso Jennifer Grim, fabulous baroque violinist Gregory Maldonado and Southern Utah’s own Ka-Wai Yu on the viola da gamba in concert!This period-instrument ensemble will perform a diverse program of chamber music: 16th century Spanish-composer Diego Ortiz’ pieces for viol in improvisatory style; Sonata III by Biagio Marini, who was pioneer in exploring solo violin playing technique; the delightful Les Nations by the cosmopolitan French composer François Couperin; Bohemian-composer Franz Benda’s splendid E-minor Flute Sonata; Boismortier’s Trio Sonata Op. 50 No. 6 that features a delightful musical conversation between the violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord; a virtuoso harpsichord solo work by Händel; as well as J. S Bach’s magnificent The Musical Offering!
The Cosmopolitan Baroque was formed in 2017. Its four regular members live in the geographical confine of the Mojave desert, but they come from all over the world, stem from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and sought training at musical institutions on three continents. Their collective diversity inspired the group’s name, as did the fact that the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were themselves ages that prided themselves on the cosmopolitanism of their musical cultures. The baroque dance suite drew on popular music from around Europe for its inspiration. Composers like Bach and Telemann learned their art by blending north German influences with the latest musical trends from France and Italy. François Couperin dreamed of a perfect style that blended Italian virtuosity with French elegance, which he called the “goûts réunis” (united tastes). And Handel achieved the ultimate cosmopolitan status, as a German composer who achieved immortality by writing Italiante music for audiences in his adopted England. Cosmopolitan Baroque hopes to continue this tradition of cosmopolitanism by blending its musicians’ various backgrounds and approaches, keeping this music of the past fresh in the twenty-first century.

Hailed as “a deft, smooth flute soloist” by the New York Times, JENNIFER GRIM’s remarkable depth and breadth as a performer of solo and chamber repertoire has gained broad national acclaim. First-prize winner in several national chamber music competitions, Ms. Grim has performed with such renowned ensembles as the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble. She is the flutist of the award-winning Zéphyros Winds and the New York Chamber Soloists. Other solo appearances include the Caramoor, Aspen, Norfolk, and Skaneateles Chamber Music Festivals.
Highlights of recent seasons included solo performances with the Lviv Philharmonic (Ukraine), UNLV Symphony Orchestra, Boca Raton Symphonia, Henderson Symphony Orchestra, and the Vermont Summer Music Festival. Ms. Grim has also been a guest artist with the Boston Chamber Music Society and the American String Quartet with harpist Nancy Allen.
Ms. Grim has given masterclasses across the country, specializing in both solo and chamber music. Among the institutions at which she has appeared are the Juilliard School, Yale University, Eastman School of Music, Arizona State University, University of Oregon, and the Idyllwild Arts Academy.
A native of Berkeley, California, Ms. Grim holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University and Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Yale University. An Ambassador Clinician for Haynes Flutes, Ms. Grim is currently Associate Professor of Music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Artistic Director of the UNLV Chamber Music Series, and serves on the Board of Directors of Chamber Music America and the National Flute Association.
GREGORY MALDONADO holds degrees from USC (D.M.A. in Musicology), CSULB (M.M. in Orchestra Conducting), and UCLA (B.A. in Violin/Viola Performance). He has taught for over 25 years at many Southern California Universities and Colleges, including USC, UCLA, CSU Long Beach, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, University of San Diego, and Riverside Community and Long Beach Community Colleges.
Dr. Maldonado has over 25 years’ experience conducting professional ensembles and has also performed on the Violin and Viola for over 40 years in many professional orchestras, including Fresno Philharmonic, Fresno Opera, Hidden Valley Opera, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Jose Symphonies; Santa Barbara Symphony, Santa Monica Symphony, Los Angeles Sinfonietta, Westside Ballet, Center Stage Opera, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Brandenburg Collegium, Magnificat, Musica Angelica, Santa Fe Pro Musica/Santa Fe Opera, San Diego Bach Collegium, Reno Philharmonic, Reno Opera, Nevada Symphonic Orchestra, Nevada Chamber Symphony, Las Vegas Camarata, Las Vegas Philharmonic, and Las Vegas Jazz Connection. He also worked as a violinist for Harrah’s Reno/Tahoe and Fantasy Springs Casinos, accompanying popular artists such as Glen Campbell, Carol Channing, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jackie Evancho, Liza Minelli, and Frank Sinatra. Additionally, he was Principal Conductor and Leader of the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, a critically acclaimed period-instrument ensemble, for nearly two decades. During his tenure with L. A. Baroque Maestro Maldonado worked with many international artists, such as Christopher Hogwood, Monica Huggett, Ton
Koopman, Reinhard Goebel, Trevor Pinnock, and Friedemann Immer. Recently, he performed for the annually televised Latin Academy of Recording Arts/Latin Person of the Year Award.
He has taught violin and viola privately to children and adults for over 30 years and has also taught group string classes and fundamentals of music theory to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students at grade, middle, and high schools, as well as private music academies. Dr. Maldonado currently teaches strings at Kessler and Sons (Charleston and Green Valley stores) and at New York Academy. Harmonia Mundi, RCM, Centaur, and Rococo labels. Dr. Maldonado has been an Instructor of Music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and at the College of Southern Nevada, and is currently Orchestra Directly at Brinley Middle School, Las Vegas. JONATHAN RHODES LEE performs as a harpsichord soloist, chamber musician, and in orchestras in this country and abroad. Recent engagements have included appearances with Mercury Baroque (Houston), Harmonia Felice (Berkeley), and the San Antonio Symphony, and with the chamber ensemble Les grâces, which he co-founded in 2005. His performances can be heard on recordings for both the MSR and Equilibrium labels. Also a musicologist, Jonathan obtained a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where his research was supported by the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund. Jonathan also holds degrees from Colgate University and the San Francisco Conservatory, and in 2002 he was a Fulbright Scholar at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he studied with Jacques Ogg. His other major teachers were Davitt Moroney, Laurette Goldberg, and Joscelyn Godwin. Jonathan is currently Assistant Professor of Music at the UNLV School of Music, where he is on the musicology faculty, with specialties in eighteenth-century music and the history of film scoring.
Cellist and viol player KA-WAI YU is Assistant Professor of Music at Dixie State University, where he teaches cello and string chamber music. Originally from Hong Kong, he has performed as a soloist and chamber musician at many major concert halls in Canada, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States, and is currently the Principal Cellist of Southwest Symphony Orchestra. His recent engagements include solo concerto appearances with Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, Jacksonville Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Dixie State Symphony Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. A recipient of scholarships from Early Music America and the Viola da Gamba Society of America, Dr. Yu has performed with such period-instrument ensembles as La Réunion Musicale, Concerto Urbano and Concentus, and has performed at the American Bach Soloists Academy, Early Music Vancouver, and the Boston Early Music Festival Fringe. He helped organize the first Dixie State University Early Music Festival in March 2017. Dr. Yu holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Cello Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and undergraduate and Master’s degrees from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. He has studied with baroque cellist Jaap ter Linden and viola da gambist Wendy Gillespie.
